A green cruise ship is putting sustainability first, turning rubbish into energy and ditcing the buffet. Sun Princess is a Sphere-class ship operated by Princess Cruises and is the third ship to sail for the cruise line under this name. It had its maiden voyage just over a year ago. The 21-deck, 177,000-tonne vessel is the first Princess ship to be fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG). This will be implemented throughout the Sphere class.
It is also the first ship in the fleet to use technology (a micro auto gasification system) that reduces waste by more than 95% by converting combustible materials, like paper and plastic, into thermal energy that can be used in other systems onboard. Sun Princess sustainably produces 100% of the freshwater used onboard each day through the desalination and reverse osmosis of seawater.
In another attempt to be environmentally friendly, the Sun Princess doesn’t have a self-serve buffet. It has been replaced with a buffet where staff members serve visitors.
If gambling is your thing, there’s a large casino, and visitors can spend some of their winnings at the selection of upscale shops, including watch and Pandora shops.
The ship also has 29 bars and restaurants where guests can enjoy an evening out onboard.
