Calls for free bus travel for those over the age of 60 in England is gaining more attention after an increase of support. Unlike those in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, over 60s in England are only offered free travel if their local authority chooses to fund it. However, at time where a number of councils are experiencings financial difficulties, this is becoming less frequent meaning most people are only eligible at the age of 66.
Now, an online petition on the Parliament’s website has quickly built up traction, gaining over 40,000 signatures. The campaign has nearly reached half of the signatures needed for it to be considered for a debate in Parliament. The petition describes the situation as “unjust” emphasising that they would like “equality for everyone over 60.”
The petition was initatied by campaigner Karen Hickman, with claims that the inconsistent rights to free bus travel across England compared to other UK regions are unfair, reports Lancs Live.
It states: “Currently, people in England who do not live in London are not entitled to free bus travel until they reach the state pension age, which we believe has changed dramatically. As people get older some oer 60s drive less and less, therefore we believe we need equality on public transport.”
Campaigners argue that reduced driving among the older population should give them the rights to free public transport.
The petition demanded a formal response from the Department for Transport, saying: “The English National Concessionary Travel Scheme costs around £700 million annually. Any changes to the statutory scheme must be carefully considered for their impact on its financial sustainability.”
The Department also emphasised: “The government wants everyone to have access to public transport and is committed to improving services. We also recognise the importance of the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) in supporting local bus travel, assisting with access to essential local services and helping those who use it to stay active and avoid isolation.”
The full response explains that those with eligible disabilities and of state pension age are provided with free off-peak travel by ENCTS and that local authorities in England are not able to offer concessions “in addition to their statutory obligations”.
The petition calls for the age of eligibility to be lowered and if it reaches 100,000, it could be debated in Parliament.
