A beautiful street branded “Instagram alley” overrun with influencers has left locals fed up.
Thought to be one of the most attractive streets in the UK, Circus Lane in Edinburgh is lined with Georgian Terrace houses, hanging baskets, and even has a charming church.
The rows of mews were initially used as equestrian stables and accommodation for the staff of the very wealthy residents of nearby Royal Circus. The once stables have now been converted into garages.
Until a few years ago this small cobbled 19th century street was considered a hidden gem but now thanks to social media influencers have been rushing to this picturesque setting to capture the perfect picture.
It has become one of the most photographed spots in the Scottish capital leading many locals feeling they have no control over how mass tourism is affecting their street.
In 2022 the pretty street was named one of the most beautiful in the world and one of the most attractive in the UK in a study by GetAgent, leading to visitors from across the world travelling to capture this now famous Circus Lane.
It does not take long to walk down Circus Lane as it is a shot cobblestone laneway. At the end of the lane, on neighbouring St Stephen’s Street, you will find St Stephen’s Church.
Locals say the numbers of visitors increased significantly around 2018. Speaking to The National Fiona said: “Instagram started it. There was no reason for people to walk down this lane before.”
Fiona understands why tourists are attracted to wandering through the picturesque lane. She said: “That’s fine, most people just enjoy it. But some abuse it and pick flowers for their photographs. The other day I picked up about 20 cigarette ends and wrappers.”
