Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako have met with the President of Vietnam, Vo Van Thuong, and his wife at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
The President and his wife are making an official visit to Japan this week. The Emperor and Empress welcomed them at the palace shortly before noon on Tuesday.
Thuong spoke about a goodwill visit to Vietnam by Japan’s Crown Prince and Princess Akishino in September to mark the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
He said the visit had great significance in strengthening friendly ties.
The Emperor thanked Thuong for the hospitality extended to the Crown Prince and Princess.
The Emperor and Empress were later joined by the Crown Prince and Princess at a luncheon for the guests.
The Imperial Household Agency says the luncheon featured Western-style cuisine, as well as some Japanese food, such as sushi.
Sake was also served for a toast for the first time, as suggested by the Emperor and Empress.
