‘Ab to aadat ho gayi hai’ Fans relive 2023 loss after India lose Under-19 World Cup final

Must read

February 11, 2024 was expected to be a day of celebration for Indian fans. Many were in fact hoping to erase the sorrow of November 19, 2023. It was the same opposition and a World Cup final. Only the age bracket was different. It was the Under-19 World Cup final between India and Australia.

But sadly, there was to be no avenging win for the Indians. Just like they lost to Australia in the ODI World Cup final last year, they were defeated by the Aussies this time too. It was the first time that India had lost in an Under-19 final to them. This was also the fourth time in nine finals that India had ended up second best.

The fans were clearly devastated and who can blame them? For most of them, it brought back flashes of the 2023 ODI World Cup final. This time also. India were unbeaten until they lost in the final.

Needless to say, social media was buzzing. Hereโ€™s what fans had to say:

This would have been Indiaโ€™s sixth title. For Australia, it was their fourth crown. Chasing a target of 254, India were bundled out for 174. They did not even put up a fight. That surely had to hurt more than the loss itself.

While there were a lot of positives for India to take away from the tournament, the fact that they could not bring home the trophy is sure to hurt. The likes of Musheer Khan, Uday Saharan and Sachin Dhas took India to the final but unfortunately faltered at the last hurdle.

Indiaโ€™s first Under-19 World Cup was in 2000 under Mohammad Kaif. Yuvraj Singh was also in that team. They would go on to win in 2008, 2012, 2018 and 2022. Under-19 skippers Virat Kohli and Prithvi Shaw went on to play for the senior side.

Five titles in nine final appearances is not a bad record. In fact, India have the most titles by any side at Under-19 level. However, it is the losses that really cause pain for fans and this one is certainly the most painful.
